Among the rescued victims was a 78-year-old grandmother who owns the church as well and a five-month-old baby who was kidnapped alongside his mother and one other person.

The Amotekun operatives were said to have swung into action following a distress call received within the church while the operation was going on during a vigil.

Meanwhile, the corps gave the suspects a hot chase after they had left the church with four victims.

They had reportedly molested some church members before making away with the four.

The Amotekun Commander in the State, Chief Adetunji Adeleye who disclosed this on Thursday at the Corps headquarters in Alagbaka, Akure, said one of the kidnappers who disguised as a woman was apprehended during the rescue in the bush.

Adeleye added that the victims who were kidnapped from their church in Edo Lodge Area of the state capital were taken to a bush along Akure-Ikere Ekiti highway before they were rescued.

The Amotekun boss said the arrested kidnapper identified as Abiodun Igbekele, confessed to the crime while investigation had begun to apprehend the other fleeing members of his gang.

“Late in the night on Wednesday at about 11:15pm, we received a distress call that kidnappers stormed the church premises and apprehended some of the worshippers.

“Within minutes, our men swung into action and we were able to comb the bush around and cordoned off all the streets around the place and we were able to apprehend this lady who incidentally is a man. He used the victims’ clothes as breasts. He is a man in a lady’s uniform.

“They molested the women and took them to a nearby bush where they were arrested. We were able to secure the release of the kidnapped victims within one hour of serious search in the surrounding bushes around.

“One of the arrested kidnappers confessed that he is part of the gang that specialises in kidnapping.”
