I Had Robust Relationship With President Tinubu – Seun Kuti

Published

on

Grammy-nominated afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti has revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was his political mentor.

The son of late afrobeat legend, Fela Kuti disclosed this while speaking on his relationship with the president in a recent interview with a media personality, Chude Jideonwo.

He explained that he has a “robust” relationship with the president whom he described as an “uncle”, stressing that he was a mentor to him while growing up.

He recalled that Tinubu was a leading member of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) that fought for Nigeria’s democracy after the military annulled the June 12, 1993 presidential election assumingly won by Chief MKO Abiola.

Kuti said, “My relationship with President Tinubu on a personal level is very robust. I grew up knowing him as an uncle. He was a very good friend of uncle Beko [Kuti]. He was a political mentor to me growing up as a child.

“Many of the ideas that I understand today, it was these men that taught me as a child growing up. Knowing them fighting for democracy in this country with NADECO, even when he [Tinubu] went on exile… Wale Soyinka, uncle Beko, Asiwaju, these were the men who fought for our democracy.

“During Tinubu’s first term as Governor of Lagos State, I performed at all his rallies. I’ve always been close to him personally. But I don’t have any political relationship with him. And even at that, I don’t think it’s anybody’s business. I’ve not been to his house in years except when I need to see him for national issues.

“So, these things that people say are just to tarnish your image. They make it seem like everybody must be paid for what they’re saying. No, no, no. What’s the truth is the truth. And I say it regardless of fear or favour of anybody.”

He, however, said so far, President Tinubu has not been performing well.

Winner of the Big Brother Naija ‘PepperDem’ edition, Mercy Eke, has cried out following the shutdown of a Nigerian commercial institution, Heritage Bank.

JomogNews Nigeria recalls that Heritage Bank’s operating license was revoked by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), as announced in a statement released on Monday, June 3, by Ag. Director, Corporate Communications, CBN, Hakama Sidi Ali.

As a follow-up on the licence revocation, the CBN appointed the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Commission (NDIC) as the liquidator of the failed bank.

The NDIC subsequently announced that depositors of Heritage Bank who have alternate accounts within the industry will be paid up to the insured amount of ₦5 million per depositor using their Bank Verification Number (BVN) to locate their alternate account.

The NDIC added that depositors with funds in excess of ₦5 million will be paid liquidation dividends upon realization of the bank’s assets and recovery of debts owed to the bank.

In a post via her X handle, Mercy Eke lamented the situation, stating that she had over N100 million with the bank and that it was saddening that only N5 million would be paid to customers.

When a fan questioned why she opened an account with Heritage Bank, the reality TV star stated that it was a requirement during her set in the BBNaija show because that was where the sponsors would pay in their cash awards.

Junior Pope: Police To Prosecute Blogger For Allegedly Defaming Businessman E-Money

The police spokesperson in Lagos State, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said a blogger identified as Stanley will be prosecuted for allegedly defaming a businessman, Mr Emeka Okonkwo, AKA E-Money, in his online video.

Hundeyin disclosed this on Monday, while parading the suspect before newsmen at the command’s headquarters, Ikeja.

The image maker said that the command received a petition from E-Money about the offensive video, stressing that a crack squad of the command, who swung into action for investigation, arrested the 24-year-old suspect at Uromi in Edo.

“He is going to be prosecuted because the things he engaged in were criminal in nature. He has allegedly defamed E-Money and he is going to be prosecuted.

“We are not prosecuting the suspect because of the personality involved, but because he has allegedly committed crime, the personality goes through the normal channel by reporting the case to the police and we investigated and arrested the suspect.

“If one is defamed and you only talk about it on social media, you have not reported the case yet to the Police, it doesn’t work that way. The best thing to do is report at any police division, area command or police headquarters, we will take it up,” he said.

Hundeyin warned social media users against causing injury to others with their contents, stressing that action may be taken against them if reports of their contents were found offensive by anyone.

He noted that every action has consequences, stressing that the moment false information goes out to the public, a report from a willing complainant, ready to prosecute the offender, the police will bring such a fellow to justice.
