According to video sighted online, some youths in the axis were firing gunshots sporadically and brandishing various weapons to disrupt peace.

Vehicles approaching Mile 12 from Ikorodu were unable to pass due to the violence, and had to turn back for fear of attacks.

Vehicular movement have been halted and trending video on social media show motorists turning back and running away from the scene .

Witnesses told newsmen that the pandemonium broke out at Ojota, Mile 12, Ketu and Agege areas of Lagos as hundreds of protesters kicking against fuel and naira barricaded the roads.

The witnesses said the protesters barricaded the roads and made bonfire with used tyres.

Following the protesters, many vehicles whose drivers refused to make a detour as directed by the protesters were smashed.

However, a contingent of Soldiers from OP Messa and Policemen were deployed to the areas to disperse the protesters.

Many people were injured during a stampede when the security agencies were throwing teargas and shooting into the air.

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said normalcy has returned to the area.

Muyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, however, tweeted, saying police officers had been dispatched to the area.

So i was told that policemen have been dispatched to the area. Many who claim to be protesting have their targets. They go to bank, ATMs, markets, malls, and financial institutions. Maybe they should be reminded that whoever attacks any https://t.co/KO5vzR0JL3

He described the instigators as protesters destroying private and public institutions, and said anyone doing so “would be treated as an armed robber”.

Protests have been occurring across the country since the Central Bank of Nigeria and President Muhammadu Buhari insisted on the illegality of old N500 and N1,000 notes.

bank, ATM, is an armed robber and will be treated as such. I see and hear people, even well educated and exposed, condemning the police for dispersing (with minimum force) those who went to attack the CBN in Benin. Very funny.
