There is tension in the Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos as okada riders resist attempts by police officers to enforce the ban on commercial motorcycles in Lagos.

The Lagos State Governor banned commercial motorcycles in some local governments in the state following the lynching and burning of a sound engineer known as David Imoh.

Today, May 19, police officers from Onireke Police Station, Ojo, impounded some commercial motorcycles plying the Mile 2 – Badagry road and the motorcyclists revolted.

They stormed the police station where some of the seized bikes were kept. They tried to overrun the station and free motorcyclists arrested by police.

Gunshots were heard ringing out in the area as police officers tried to keep them away. The motorcyclists retaliated by throwing stones at the officers.

The enraged motorcyclists then started a fire in the middle of the road, causing owners of vehicles to abandon their cars and flee.

The incident has caused heavy traffic in the area.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has issued a ban on operations of commercial motorcycles, also known as Okada in some areas of the state.

The ban followed the gruesome murder of a Sound Engineer, David.

David was lynched and burnt by some irate okada riders in the Lekki area of the state, a sad incident over which 10 suspects were already in the police net.

Speaking with all DPOs and Area Commanders across the state at the Lagos House, Ikeja, Sanwo-Olu said the directive covers all highways and some local governments, including Eti-Osa, Ikeja, Surulere, Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland and Apapa.

The governor said other security agencies will join in the enforcement.

Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Wednesday struck out a six-count amended charge brought against the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu.

The judge threw away the fresh charges following its withdrawal by counsel to the Federal Government, Adamu Kaatu.

Citing the need for the government to open the trial of Kanu after years of delay, Kaatu opted to withdraw the new charges when it was discovered the trial cannot be opened when an amended charge is pending.

Apparently desperate that witnesses be called to give evidence against Kanu, the government lawyer hurriedly applied for the withdrawal which was not opposed by Mike Ozekhome (SAN) standing for the defendant.

Justice Nyako, in a brief ruling, struck out the amended charge to pave way for the Federal Government to open its case against Kanu.
