The Council of Yoruba Leaders Worldwide has declared its support for the Western Nigerian Security Network popularly known as “Amotekun” .The organization described the initiative as the way forward and the main panacea for the security challenges being faced by the six South/Western States in Nigeria.

In a communique issued to CITY NEWS today by the Convener of the group and a notable Yoruba leader of thought, Barrister George Olufemi Ogunjimi, the group says it’s throwing its weight behind the security network because it’s high time the Yoruba States fashioned a way of controlling their territory in order to see to the rising wave of insecurity in the region.

Ogunjimi hinted that his group is backing the recently launched South West regional security outfit Operation Amotekun and urged other geo-political zones to emulate the gesture which he said would complement already existing federal government security architecture.

In the communique, Ogunjimi noted that there are seventy million Yorubas in Nigeria and about forty million people of Yoruba extraction in the diaspora and the race leaders, especially the ones in the diaspora have already started sending their children to places where they can acquire the basic art of self-defense and mild para-military training which is part of their core essence as future leaders in-waiting.

However, Ogunjimi sounded a note of warning by saying the leaders of the Yoruba nation will not fold its arms whilst nationals from neighbouring countries overrun their territory under whatever guise. He maintained that the rationale behind the formation of “Amotekun” by south/West governors is to put an end the spate of banditry, armed robbery, kidnapping, herdsmen invasion, and other threats to the security of lives and properties, as well as the economic advancement of the region.
