Shekarau made the announcement at his residence, Mundubawa Palace, in Kano after concluding weeks of political consultations with his supporters and political associates.

He joined the ruling party alongside Senator Bello Hayatu Gwarzo, another former PDP chieftain.

This marks another return to the APC after his previous defection to the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), and later to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2022.

He explained in 2022 while defecting from the ruling party that the APC in Kano State was struggling with an unresolved crisis.

“I am defecting from the APC to my new party, the New Nigeria Peoples Party, as a result of unfairness and injustice by Kano State governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

“For the past two years there has been an unresolved crisis in the Kano State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, hence, I have resigned my membership,” he said.

Born on November 5, 1955, Shekarau, a veteran Nigerian educator and politician served as a two-term Governor of Kano State. He was elected in April 2003 and re-elected in April 2007.

He also served as Minister of Education from 2014–2015, and a Senator for Kano Central from 2019 to 2023.
