President Tinubu Names Tunji Disu Acting IGP Following Egbetokun’s Exit
President Bola Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun as the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and appointed Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) Tunji Disu as the new Acting IGP with immediate effect.
Egbetokun tendered his resignation letter earlier on Tuesday, citing pressing family considerations.
Announcing the development, the Presidency, in a statement issued on Tuesday by Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said President Tinubu expressed profound appreciation to the outgoing police chief for his decades of distinguished service to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation.
The President acknowledged Egbetokun’s dedication, professionalism, and steadfast commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s internal security architecture during his tenure.
Appointed in June 2023, Egbetokun was serving a four-year term scheduled to conclude in June 2027, in line with the amended provisions of the Police Act.
In view of the prevailing security challenges across the country, President Tinubu, acting in accordance with extant laws and legal guidance, approved the appointment of AIG Tunji Disu to steer the affairs of the Nigeria Police Force in an acting capacity.
The President expressed confidence that Disu’s experience, operational depth, and demonstrated leadership capacity would provide steady and focused direction for the Force at a critical time.
“In compliance with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, President Tinubu will shortly convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider the appointment of AIG Disu as substantive Inspector-General of Police,” the statement said.
Following the Council’s consideration, Disu’s name will be transmitted to the Senate for confirmation, in line with statutory requirements.
President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to enhancing national security, strengthening institutional capacity, and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable, and fully equipped to discharge its constitutional responsibilities.
The Presidency assured Nigerians that the leadership transition would not disrupt ongoing security operations nationwide.
The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the arrest of ASP Nuhu Usman for the extrajudicial killing of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday sparked widespread outrage after police operatives from the Effurun Area Command responded to reports from the Benin Motor Park along the Warri–Sapele Expressway.
A viral video showed the suspect handcuffed, seated on the ground, and pleading for his life before being shot in broad daylight.
The suspect had reportedly been apprehended by members of a transport union while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.
Police said that while efforts were underway to take the suspect into custody, the team leader, ASP Usman, discharged his firearm in violation of regulations, resulting in the suspect’s death.
“The leadership of the Nigeria Police Force has directed the immediate transfer of the officer and his team to Force Headquarters, Abuja, where they will face the Force Disciplinary Committee for summary disciplinary measures and prosecution.
“The Inspector-General of Police extends his condolences to the family of the deceased and assures them that justice will be served in accordance with the law. He further urges members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding as the disciplinary and legal processes take their course,” the statement read.
The lawmaker representing Ikeja Federal Constituency, James Faleke, has picked up the All Progressives Congress (APC) Expression of Interest and Nomination forms for Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, the Deputy Governor of Lagos State for the 2027 governorship election.
The form was presented to Faleke by the party’s National Organising Secretary, Sulaiman Argungu, following the payment of N50 million for both the nomination and the expression-of-interest forms.
Faleke, founder of the Tinubu Support Group, had also picked up the nomination forms on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in what party officials described as part of the early mobilisation for the president’s re-election bid.

James Faleke, a member of the House of Representatives and founder of the Tinubu Support Group (TSG), has officially picked up the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential nomination forms for President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.
The forms, which include the Expression of Interest and Nomination forms, were obtained on April 28, 2026, following a payment of ₦100 million. This move effectively kicks off the President’s campaign for a second term.
The APC National Organising Secretary, Suleiman Argungu, on Tuesday in Abuja, declared the process open and presented the Expression of Interest and Nomination forms to Faleke, who also serves as the founder of the Tinubu Support Groups.
The Independent National Electoral Commission has scheduled the Presidential and National Assembly elections for Saturday, January 16, 2027, while governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will hold on Saturday, February 6, 2027.
The commission also announced that party primaries, including the resolution of related disputes, will run from April 23, 2026, to May 30, 2026.
INEC further stated that campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections will begin on August 19, 2026, while those for governorship and state assembly elections will commence on September 9, 2026.
