Controversial Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Gumi has deleted all his posts containing criticisms of the United States, following recent high-profile U.S. military actions abroad.

The rumors surfaced on X (formerly Twitter) today, with multiple accounts posting screenshots and messages alleging that Gumi quietly removed anti-American content from his platforms.

Some users linked the supposed deletions to reports of U.S. forces capturing Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, joking that the cleric was “frightened” by demonstrations of American power.

One viral post read: “Immediately this Arch Islamist Terrorist Sheik Gumi of Nigeria heard of Maduro’s capture he quickly deleted all his offensive Posts against America.” Similar messages, often accompanied by laughing emojis, spread rapidly, garnering thousands of views and reposts.

Sheikh Gumi, a Kaduna-based scholar known for his outspoken views on security and foreign policy, has been vocal in recent weeks criticizing U.S. airstrikes on suspected terrorist camps in northwestern Nigeria. In late December 2025, he described the strikes as polarizing, accused the U.S. of lacking moral authority in counterterrorism, and urged the Nigerian government to halt military cooperation with Washington. He suggested partnering instead with countries like Turkey, China, or Pakistan.

Gumi primarily shares his statements via Facebook, where his recent posts on the airstrikes remain visible as of this report.
