States in the South-West have heightened security following the surge in attacks on communities and killings by suspected bandits and terrorists in neighbouring Kwara State.
Security chiefs in Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, and Ondo confirmed to The PUNCH that containment plans have been activated to prevent bandits from infiltrating their states as military operations continue in Kwara.
Intelligence reports indicate that bandits fleeing the military operations in Kwara are attempting to move into the South-West. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to ensure they do not advance.
In recent weeks, Kwara has experienced significant violence, including the killing of at least 12 members of a local forest guard unit in Oke-Ode and multiple abductions in various communities. The attacks have led to widespread fear, prompting many residents to flee to safer towns.
Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq condemned the attacks and called for increased military presence. He visited Oke-Ode to offer condolences to bereaved families and assured them of enhanced security measures.
In response to the attacks, the Nigerian Air Force has deployed fighter jets to support ground forces in engaging the attackers. Despite ongoing efforts, residents express frustration and fear over the recurring violence.
Security officials, including the Oyo State Commandant of the Amotekun Corps, have assured residents of preparedness against potential bandit attacks. The Alaafin of Oyo has also offered to collaborate with Kwara State in addressing the banditry surge.
Efforts to prevent the influx of bandits have been reported by police in Osun and Ondo states, with tactical teams deployed to border communities. The Ekiti State government has also taken steps to block any potential infiltration by coordinating with military operations in Kwara.
The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, emphasized the need for regional cooperation to combat the threats of insurgency and banditry, urging citizens to see security as a collective responsibility.
