Senator representing Oyo South Senatorial District in the National Assembly under the All Progressives Congress, Sharafadeen Alli, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the Oniroko of Iroko, Oba Olasunkanmi Opeola.

Oba Opeola, aged 64, joined his ancestors in the early hours of Friday.

Born on March 9, 1961, he ascended the throne as Oniroko on February 4, 2011, and ruled for 14 years.

He had reportedly been on a sickbed for some time at an undisclosed hospital but instructed his family last Thursday to take him back to the palace, where he eventually passed away the following day.

In a statement released by Senator Alli’s media office in Ibadan on Saturday, the late monarch was described as a bridge-builder and symbol of peace, whose death has left a significant void in the state and beyond.

Alli, who is also the Ekarun Balogun of Ibadanland, said, “His demise marks the end of an era of remarkable leadership, cultural stewardship, and unwavering commitment to the progress and unity of his people.

“Opeola’s contributions to the growth and development of Iroko are evident and will be cherished for generations to come.”

He added that the deceased’s contributions to the socio-cultural associations and Ibadanland were characterised by vision, compassion, and a relentless drive to uplift his community.

“His passing is a great loss to us, and I join other members of the club in mourning his departure.”

The lawmaker extended his condolences to the family, chiefs, and the entire Iroko community.

“On behalf of my family and myself, we extend our heartfelt sympathies to the royal family of Iroko, the chiefs, and the good people of the town, and indeed to all who mourn this irreparable loss.

“May the Almighty overlook his shortcomings, comfort his loved ones, and grant them the fortitude to bear this painful loss,” he said.

He also prayed that Oba Opeola’s soul may rest in perfect peace.

Recall that Oba Opeola was one of 21 High Chiefs and Baales elevated to beaded crown monarchs by the late former Governor of the state, Abiola Ajimobi.

Ajimobi’s decision, according to the government at the time, was aimed at reforming the age-old monarchical structure of the ancient city.
