A four-storey building under construction has collapsed in Ojodu Berger area of Lagos State, trapping dozens of occupants on Saturday.
The ill-fated building, said to be under construction, also housed the well-known EqualRight Restaurant.
According to eyewitness accounts, the collapse occurred at approximately 8 am, catching occupants and passersby by surprise.
JomogNews Nigeria gathered that the ill-fated building sited on Oremeta Street, Ojodu Berger, with an already completed section, was being used for commercial purposes before it caved in on Saturday morning.
An eyewitness who spoke on the grounds of anonymity said the cause of the collapse was yet to be ascertained, but admitted that the building was a “Bomb waiting to explode.”
“Anyone who knows that building should know that it was a bomb waiting to explode. I hardly go there to buy food because I was always scared the building would collapse while I’m there.
“Right now, we cannot ascertain how many people are trapped under the rubbles, but emergency responders have begun rescue operations”, the source said.
Eyewitnesses, who spoke at separate interviews, said the building caved in on the occupants, including staff and customers, who came to patronise the popular EqualRight Restaurant in Ojodu Berger.
As of the time of filing this report, Good Samarithans were making frantic efforts to rescue people trapped in the rubble, while awaiting officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).
