The clergyman, who was once the Archbishop of the Niger Province and Bishop of Nnewi, was set free alongside his driver.

Several media outlets had earlier reported that Prof. Okpala and his driver were abducted by suspected kidnapers about four weeks ago.

He went missing on his way to Umuchu, a community in Anambra State while travelling for a burial ceremony.

Confirming his disappearance, Bishop of Nnewi Diocese, Rt. Rev. Ndubuisi Obi, called for intercessory prayers for the Archbishop’s safe return.

He wrote, “Good evening Fathers In God. With a heavy heart, we wish to inform us that our dear Father, Most Rev Prof. Godwin Okpala (Rtd Archbishop of the Niger province and Bishop of Nnewi) has been missing since yesterday (Friday) morning.

“He travelled with his driver to Umuchu but never got to his destination and he is yet to return, neither have we heard from them. He together with his driver and his car are nowhere to be found.

“We earnestly plead for your fervent prayers for their safety and swift return. The relevant authorities have been contacted and we are hopeful and trusting in God’s divine intervention for a positive resolution”

But according to Daily Post, the retired Anglican Archbishop has now been released by his captors.

Though the details of his release are still sketchy as of the time of filing this report, but it is being celebrated on various social media platforms of the Anglican Communion.

One of such platforms is the official Facebook page of St Stephens Anglican Church, Nnewi.
