The Bauchi Emirate Council has revoked the traditional title of Senator Shehu Buba Umar, who represents the Bauchi South senatorial district in the National Assembly.
JomogNews Nigeria reports that the decision follows accusations that Senator Umar insulted and criticized the Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed.
Recall that Buba of the All Progressive Congress, APC, who holds the title of the ‘Mandarin Bauchi’ accused Governor Mohammed of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, of diverting palliative items provided by the APC-led federal government.
These accusations were made during a press briefing last week, where Senator Umar alleged that essential supplies, including rice, corn, and fertilizer provided by the APC-led federal government, were sold by the state government instead of being distributed to the public.
The Senator was reacting to the governor’s criticism of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s policies.
In response to these allegations, the Bauchi Emirate Council convened a meeting to discuss the Senator’s conduct.
Following the meeting, a letter dated August 14, 2024, and signed by Nasiru Musa on behalf of the Emirate Council’s secretary, was issued.
The letter stated that the council had resolved to strip Senator Umar of his traditional title, “Mandarin Bauchi,” due to his actions, which were deemed to be in violation of the values and traditions upheld by the Bauchi Emirate.
