Umahi also instructed that the works should not disrupt the flow of traffic.

The minister said the brick deck work would be completed next month and would be inaugurated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The bridge was partially closed to traffic a few weeks ago to allow for comprehensive repair, with lane markings, new streetlights and CCTV installed.

Represented by the Federal Controller of Works, Lagos, Olukorede Kesha, the minister hailed Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his assistance in the management of traffic during the rehabilitation.

He thanked Nigerians for their cooperation, which, according to him, assisted in rehabilitating the bridge.

Umahi expressed indebtedness to workers of the Federal Ministry of Works, especially the Director of Bridge Rehabilitation, Director Southwest and Federal Controller of Works Lagos, for their commitments in the success of the rehabilitation.

He said the ongoing under deck and underwater works would not disrupt traffic flow and would strengthen the integrity of the bridge when completed.

The Federal Controller thanked President Tinubu for his commitment to infrastructural development.

“He’s not just committed to providing infrastructure, he’s also committed to providing indelible ones that will remain in the minds of Nigerians even years after he has left office.

‘Without his commitments, this project would not have become a reality. Without his support, he has supported the ministry all the way. It has never been done like this,” she said.

She added: “Most of the time, what we have is release of money in an epileptic manner. But this one, the release of funds was done 100 per cent. He was committed to the rehabilitation of the bridge without minding the cost. He had the money and he was willing to spend it.”

Lagos State Commissioner for Transport, Osiyemi Seun, said: “Maintenance in this place will be categorised into two, maintenance of infrastructure, and also maintenance of safety as regards vandalism.”
