Aliko Dangote, Nigerian billionaire and founder of Dangote Group, has named the road leading to his oil refinery after Herbert Wigwe, as a way to immortalise the late businessman.

Dangote revealed this while paying homage to Wigwe during a tribute by professionals on Monday.

Dressed in black attire, the Chairman of the Dangote Group broke into tears as he paid tributes to Wigwe.

“To immortalise my beloved friend, my brother, and my mentee, I have actually decided to name a major refinery and petrochemical road, out of the 120 kilometers, the biggest road will now be named ‘Herbert Wigwe,” he said.

Wigwe was the group chief executive officer (GCEO) of Access Holdings Plc, a Nigerian financial institution.

Wigwe, alongside his wife, son, and Abimbola Ogunbanjo, the former group chairman of the Nigerian Exchange Group Plc (NGX Group), were involved in a helicopter crash in the United States on February 10, 2024.

All six passengers onboard the Eurocopter EC130 helicopter died.

The Eurocopter EC130 helicopter conveying them crashed around 10 pm on Friday in California — 7 am on Saturday in Nigeria — near the Nevada border.

Meanwhile, before his death, Wigwe was also the founder of Wigwe University.

He was the deputy managing director at Access Bank from 2002 to 2014 when he became the group managing director and CEO.

Wigwe served as the chairman of Access Bank (Ghana), Access Investment & Securities Limited, Central Securities and Clearing System (CSCS) and presently as chairman of Access Bank (UK) Limited and Unified Payments Services Limited.
