The Singaporean Government has activated a ban on travelers who have been in Nigeria within 14 days from entering the country due to fears of the Omicron variant of the Coronavirus.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Singaporean Ministry of Health of Friday, according to Bloomberg.

The Singaporean Government ordered that all long-term pass holders and short-term visitors with recent travel history to Ghana, Malawi and Nigeria within the last 14 days will not be allowed to enter the country, or transit starting from the 5th of December.

What the Singaporean government is saying.

“Should the omicron variant be more transmissible than delta and become the globally dominant variant over time, it is a matter of time before it establishes itself in Singapore,” they said.

They added that they will need extra measures to “buy time” to learn more about dealing with the Omicron variant, and to continue with its booster program.

They added that Bulgaria, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Norway and Poland will be placed in so-called Category III travel health curbs from the 7th of December, ordering travellers to do a 10-day quarantine at home or in a hotel.

In case you missed it

This online medium reported earlier this week that the Canadian Government announced a ban on travellers who have visited African nations including Nigeria, Malawi and Egypt, amid worries over the spread of the Omicron variant of the Coronavirus.

Canada also recently identified five people with the new variant, at least two of whom were recently in Nigeria.
