The state NUJ made the call in a press statement signed by Secretary, Usman Chiji in Minna, the state capital.

The statement reads in part,” Niger NUJ joins our colleagues in mourning this wicked and dastardly act of enemies of our noble profession. The council views the killing of the late Vanguard newspaper reporter as one too many for professionals to bear.”

The Secretary explained that the act is not only unfortunate but unacceptable, especially as the Union just finished marking the international day to end impunity and other violent attacks against journalists the world over.

It stated, “we also concur with the calls for an in-depth investigation to unravel immediate and remote circumstances surrounding this gruesome murder of one of the most dedicated and hard-working members.

“The Secretary, on behalf of the Niger NUJ, condoles with the National President, the entire National Secretariat, Nigerian journalists, and zone D in particular over the tragedy.

“We pray God to comfort the bereaved families, and grant the soul of the deceased eternal rest, please accept condolences from Niger council.”
