Those killed during the attack include three policemen who were part of the Emir’s security team and five others in the convoy of the traditional ruler.

The attack occured on Thursday night along Zaria-Funtua road while the Emir was on his way home from Abuja but the monarch excaped unhurt.

Usman Nagogo, Zamfara state commissioner of police, was said to have confirmed the incident in Katsina state on Friday, but declined giving more details.

“The Emir was in his official vehicle with a Toyota Hilux forming part of the convoy,” a palace source told Hum Angle.

“He didn’t sustain any injury but we lost eight occupants of the Toyota Hilux including the driver, two palace guards, three police escorts and two traditional title holders, they were all killed by the gunmen.”

There has been a spike in the activities of bandits in the north-west recently.

Last Friday, over 300 schoolboys were abducted from Government Science Secondary, Kankara in Katsina.

The schoolboys were released on Thursday — after spending nearly seven days in captivity.
