The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a fresh advisory clarifying that a U.S. visa expiration date does not dictate how long an international traveler can legally remain in the United States.
In a statement shared on its official X handle on Sunday, the Mission clarified that the duration of stay is determined solely by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the point of entry.
“Reminder! The length of time an international visitor is allowed to stay in the United States is determined by the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer upon your arrival, NOT your visa expiration date,” the Mission stated as part of its #VisaWiseTravelSmart campaign.
It explained that a US visa only grants permission to travel to a US port of entry and request admission, not automatic entry or a fixed duration of stay.
“The CBP officer determines your ‘Admit Until Date’ upon your arrival, and you can check the date you must depart online,” the statement added.
The advisory comes as Washington increases attention on visa overstays by foreign nationals, including Nigerians. Recent immigration data and policy signals indicate that the US government is focusing more closely on countries with higher rates of non-compliance.
The Mission reiterated that overstaying beyond the approved “Admit Until Date,” even with a valid visa, could lead to serious consequences, including visa cancellation and ineligibility for future US visas.
Department of Homeland Security, which identified Nigeria among countries with notable overstay figures in both visitor and student visa categories.
According to available data, Nigeria records a B1/B2 visa overstay rate of 5.56 per cent, while the rate for student and exchange visas stands at 11.90 per cent.
In response, the US Mission has intensified its #VisaWiseTravelSmart awareness campaign to educate applicants on visa rules, interview preparation, and post-arrival compliance.
Officials noted that visa violations by individuals could have broader implications, potentially leading to stricter visa processing conditions for other Nigerian applicants, including longer waiting periods and increased documentation requirements.
With thousands of Nigerians travelling to the United States each month for education, business, and tourism, the Mission urged travellers to check their entry records immediately after arrival and ensure they depart before the authorised date to maintain a clean travel history.
