It is a season of open heaven and every drop of rain usually comes with either pain or pleasure for the people of Lagos.
Just like it had always been in the yesteryears, many Lagosians are usually disturbed whenever the raining season approaches but along the line, they tend to wake up to the reality and fashion out a way of adjusting to whatever inconvenience it brings along.
Here is another season and the pang of rain is already taking tolls on the residents.

In the last two to three weeks, the consistent heavy downpour appears to have further exposed lagosians into another round of tough time with furious flood that has turned many areas into an abandoned community.
There has been call from affected residents for the government to do something and save them from the ravaging flood which is caused by continuous days of rainfall and now threatening to render them homeless.
However, the Lagos State government has spoken but its statement seems not friendly to the affected people and going by the position of the state government, many lagosians will have to relocate from what used to be their comfort zones.
In a statement by the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tunji Bello on Thursday, there are fourteen Local Government in Lagos that are prone to flood and the residents of the areas need to quickly relocate.

The Hydrological Services Agency had on May 28 identified four major areas that will witness more high intensity of rainfall between now and September and these include Lagos Mainland, Mushin, Ikorodu and Ibeju Lekki.
However Mr Bello later identified other 14 areas that will witness a devastating flood and low lying structures which are very common in the areas will be terribly affected.
The local government areas according to him are:
Lagos Mainland, Alimosho, Amuwo Odofin, Ikeja, Kosofe, Eti-Osa, Apapa, Ojo, Oshodi-Isolo, Agege, Ifako-Ijaye, Badagry, Surulere and Ajeromi- Ifelodu.

The Commissioner passionately appealed to people residing in the listed areas to as a matter of urgency move out to avoid loss of lives and properties that may be caused by the iminent flood.
No doubt, this is going to be a tough task for residents of these areas going by the difficulty they will have to go through before securing another accomodations coupled with economic factor.
One thing however that cannot be taken away from residents of Lagos is the fact that most of the flood disasters are caused by the people. This was further confirmed by the honorable Commissioner.

He noted that some traders especially in Mushin and other areas do not dispose their waste properly. They simply drop them in the flood channels, block the drainage and consequently obstruct the free flow of flood during heavy downpour. This is the consequence of their actions they will have to suffer.
Hence, for those who reside in these areas, it will be save to follow the government directives so as to avert the evil day because the days ahead may not likely be friendly in terms of rainfall.
