Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland, has joined his ancestors at the age of 91.
The monarch passed away on Sunday, just hours after the announcement of the death of Muhammadu Buhari, his longtime friend and former president.
Oba Adetona was one of the longest-reigning traditional rulers in the country. He ascended the throne on April 2, 1960, and was a highly respected voice among Yoruba monarchs and across the country.
Details of the circumstances surrounding his death are still emerging, and official statements from the palace and state government are expected shortly.
