Two persons have been confirmed killed and many passengers were recorded when a moving train rammed into a BRT bus at the PWD bus stop in the Ikeja area of the state on Thursday morning.
JomogNews gathered that the moving train was coming from Agege and ran into the BRT Bus at PWD with the Lagos state government workers on board crossing the rail to link Ikeja GRA and dragged it to Shogunle area of Lagos.
The accident has caused a gridlock on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway from for motorists coming from Oshodi around Shogunle to Ikeja-Along.
The Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed the accident in a statement.
“The accident recorded many casualties as the staff bus was fully loaded with govt staff going to the office this morning,” the statement added.
A video of some victims being rescued from the wreckage has gone viral online, with many calling on the government to come to the aid of the survivors.
It is yet unclear the number of casualties from the incident but survivors were seen to be bloodied and injured.
A Twitter user, Gidi, while sharing the video taken from the scene of the incident said, “One minute you’re going to work in a BRT, next minute a train is dragging your bus from ikeja to shogunle. I pray for everyone involved this morning – @seunlopez_ #Lagos”
“A significant number of casualties are anticipated following a collision involving a train and a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) vehicle. The train collided with the BRT, causing it to be dragged from the Ikeja Along area to Shogunle,” he added.
All efforts to ascertain the number of casualties recorded from the accident at the time of filing this report were unsuccessful. Several calls made to Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Nigerian Railway Corporation and other relevant agencies were not answered.
