Stakeholders ‘Pick Holes’ In Buhari’s United Nations Address, Say Speech Was Disappointing
JomogNews Nigeria reports that, controversy has continued to trail President Muhammadu Buhari’s speech at the just concluded 76th United Nations General Assembly, UNGA, in New York, United States of America.
According to DAILY POST, the president last week Friday, addressed world leaders which captured some crisis currently rocking the country, West Africa and the entire continent.
On Coronavirus, President Buhari, during the speech, told UN that his administration built hospitals across Nigeria to fight the spread of the pandemic which ravaged the entire world in 2020.
“We built isolation centres and emergency hospital wards in record time all over the country. We carry out genomic sequencing in designated laboratories across the country with a view to detecting variants in circulation”, the president had said.
On the security menace bedeviling the entire nation, the Nigerian leader during the meeting, claimed that his government was addressing the challenges of terrorism and banditry currently bedeviling the Northern parts of the country.
“Nigeria has spared no effort in addressing the challenges of terrorism posed by the activities of Boko Haram in North-East Nigeria and the Lake Chad region, as well as banditry in the North-West and North-Central Nigeria. The Nigerian Security Forces have recorded considerable success in the fight against terrorism. As a result of the renewed vigour of our military, many terrorist fighters are voluntarily surrendering to our security forces,”he said.
Amid the backlash in Nigeria over his numerous loan requests in the past few years, President Buhari, during the speech, appealed to ”rich nations” and international financial institutions for outright debt cancellation for countries facing financial crisis birthed by COVID-19 pandemic.
Buhari particularly urged the G20 countries to extend their debt suspension initiatives to all developing countries currently facing fiscal and liquidity challenges.
However, the speech has triggered backlash from concerned Nigerians as some accused the president of diverting from the security and economic reality of the country.
Reacting, the National Coordinator of the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko in a chat with DAILY POST on Sunday, said the president’s speech lacked truth.
According to him, “In as much as we wouldn’t like to join words with Mr. President pertaining to his opinion about some improvements in security across board, we want to humbly disagree with our President on the ground that insecurity isn’t so much about physical violence but the greatest kind of insecurity is economic insecurity which gives rise to other branches of security challenges such as security of lives and property”.
He further stated that Buhari should rather tell Nigerians how many suspected “murderers and terrorists that have been arrested successfully and how many Fulani herdsmen have been jailed”.
Similarly, the Nigerian representative at the African Youth Union Commission, AYUC, Aina Segun Aina, told DAILY POST in Abuja that the president was expected to solicit for help from the world leaders due to his failure to tackle the current security challenges.
“We need all the support we can get at this time and that’s what we expect our Government to be soliciting for at this particular point in time especially during Mr President’s presentation to world leaders at the just-concluded UN General Assembly.
“The world today cannot afford a humanitarian crisis of 200 million people and therefore must be drafted into the situation in Nigeria in terms of security sophistication, technology and intelligence gathering including economic and social development generally”, he said.
DAILY POST reports that President Buhari’s speech came when some activists, particularly the Yoruba Nation’s agitator and other activists led by the former presidential aide, Reno Omokri stormed the Abuja House in New York to protest bad governance in Nigeria.
Pro- and anti-Buhari protests were constant features throughout the duration of President Buhari’s participation at the programme. They allegedly clashed on Friday while the president was giving his speech.
It was alleged that the pro-government protesters who congregated under the name of “One Nigeria” were Black Americans who were allegedly hired to counter the other protesters.
Reacting to the protest, a lecturer at the Benue State University, Makurdi who pleaded not to be mentioned, told DAILY POST on phone that President Buhari “only knows how to bring shame to Nigeria.
“Imagine the show of shame in New York on Friday when the whole world was watching and leaders of nations of the earth were present. When I watched the video online, I was ashamed of myself, Nigeria has been registered as a country with bad governance where citizens can’t keep quiet anymore.
“I just hope that the president and his cabals would learn from that drama and do the needful,” he said.
A new video has emerged showing two men reportedly kidnapped by Boko Haram insurgents in Borno State, pleading for assistance to secure their release.
One of the captives, former Biu Local Government Area Chairman Hassan Biu Miringa, revealed that their abductors are demanding a $300,000 ransom.
Miringa said he and another individual were taken in December 2025 and have remained in the custody of the militants.
In the video shared by Zagazola Makama, Miringa introduced himself, saying: “I am Hassan Biu Miringa, former Chairman of Biu Local Government from 2020 to 2022. Four years after my tenure, we were kidnapped by the soldiers of Khilafa about two weeks ago. Alhamdulillah, we are still alive, but we urgently need help to save our lives.”
He added that negotiations with the kidnappers had been underway, with some preliminary agreements reportedly reached.
“We have engaged them on four separate occasions and reached an understanding. We appeal to our leaders, especially Borno State Deputy Governor Alhaji Usman Umar Kadafur, the National Assembly representative for Biu, Kwaya, and Shani Hon. Betera Aliyu, as well as our community leaders, to temper justice with mercy and assist us. We are their children and have been working together,” Miringa said.
He confirmed the ransom demand, explaining that each captive is expected to pay $150,000, totaling $300,000 for their freedom, and pleaded for urgent intervention to reunite with their families.
The video highlights ongoing concerns over kidnappings and insecurity in southern Borno State, which have persisted despite government efforts to curb insurgent activity in the region.
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, on Saturday visited Port Harcourt City Local Government as part of his “thank you” visit across Rivers State.
Upon his arrival, a group of women displayed a symbolic gesture of loyalty by spreading their wrappers on the ground for his motorcade.
The women and supporters of the Minister were in a jubilant mode as Wike drove on the wrappers.
Wike has been going around local governments in the state to appreciate them for their support while reeling out moves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In the course of his visits, the Minister had fired several salvos at political actors in the state, warning that their sudden support for President Bola Tinubu won’t secure them any ticket in 2027.
Wike also renewed rivalry with Governor Sim Fubara over the leadership control of the political space in the state.
The Rivers State House of Assembly has officially reaffirmed that the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, are ongoing and have not been suspended.
The Assembly said the process is still ongoing and is being conducted strictly in line with constitutional provisions.
This was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Hon. Enemi George.
According to the statement, the impeachment process, which began on Thursday, January 8, 2026, remains on course in line with the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
The lawmakers disclosed that separate notices of allegations bordering on gross misconduct have been served on both the governor and his deputy in line with Section 188 of the Constitution.
“The notices of allegations of gross misconduct against the Governor and the Deputy Governor have been duly forwarded to them by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule, and the House is awaiting their responses,” the statement said.
The Assembly maintained that it is constitutionally obligated to act in the interest of the rule of law and ensure that no public office holder acts outside legal boundaries.
Reacting to reports suggesting that the impeachment move had been halted, the House accused some individuals and media outlets of deliberately spreading misinformation to mislead the public and stir tension between the legislature and Rivers residents.
The lawmakers described such reports as false and insisted they would not succumb to intimidation, threats, or blackmail.
“We are aware of renewed attempts by certain persons and media platforms to misinform the public by claiming that the impeachment process has been discontinued. The public should disregard such falsehoods, as the process remains active,” the statement added.
The Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to democratic principles and constitutional responsibilities, stressing that it would not be distracted by what it termed “cheap propaganda.”
It also appreciated the people of Rivers State for their support and prayers amid the ongoing political developments and extended goodwill to Nigerians committed to the nation’s democratic journey.
